     Production of pre-basic potato seed - Algeria        

Production of pre-basic potato seed a prime in Algeria thanks to SODEA – TECHNICO joint venture.

Specialized in the agricultural development , SODEA is a part of numerous companies of the group HASNAOUI, the main office is situated in Sidi Bel Abbés a small town in the western side of Algeria .

Amongst others activities led by the this company that became a leading establishment in its country, the reproduction of the pre-basic potato seed emerge in a first-rate standing.

This operation would not have been possible without the commitment of TECHNICO to go along with all the stages of the technical route by giving to SODEA the high-level frames.

The first action was initiated during the summer 2005 , it was related to the introduction to Algeria of G.0 micro-tubers which were planted on a 4 hectares surface by using the largely known varieties locally DESIREE and DIAMANT.

In spite of the rigor of the summer and difficult climatic conditions, the production obtained at the end of the cycle is considered to be satisfactory by the two parts. The phyto-technic parameters and plant health were declared in conformity with the Algerian standard by the official organization in charge with the control and certification with the seedlings and seeds(C.N.C.C).

It is what justified SODEA to start the second phase of G.1 multiplication towards G.2 on an extent of 12 hectares framed by a TECHNICO expert and four national engineers.

Setting on the ground in March 2006, the production of pre-bases tubers is announced for mid-July. The plant which already was checked twice by the C.N.C.C comprises apparently well, which is encouraging for the continuation of the program.

In a parallel direction, another program of G.0 towards G.1 multiplication was initiated during the same period planted on a 8 hectares surface and get the same positive appreciation for the varieties SPUNTA- DESIREE – DIAMENT – KENNEBECK - NICOLA – PENTLAND DELL.

If through time the results are confirmed, a more ambitious program is in store for TECHNICO and SODEA.

This joint venture will further grow up thanks to the facilities offered by the Algerian potato seed market.
It is also important to set emphasis on the originality of this operation of pre-basic potato seed multiplication. In fact, SODEA is the only Algerian state-agreeable private company for the production of pre-basic potato seed, again we will be tempted to say that the TECHNICO – SODEA synergy is a prime in Algeria .
